Think adoption first
This title kind of explains itself but please, please, PLEASE! Always think about rescuing/adopting a dog from a rescue group or shelter. Petfinder.com is a great site that lists a lot of groups that rescue animals. Most of the animals have stories about them like where they came from or what their temperament is like. You can also search by breed so if you are looking for a specific dog breed it is easy to find. There are a lot of breed specific rescues so even if you want a purebred dog they are out there and you don't have to go to breeders!! My aunt just recently rescued a morkie (yorkshire terrier and maltese) puppy from a group that specifically rescues dogs from puppy mills. She did not have to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on this "designer dog" and she was able to help save a life.
